Hebburn Central – Case Study

Dec

Organisation –

The Multi-Award winning Hebburn Central is the first stage of South-Tyneside Council’s major investment plans to regenerate Hebburn Town Centre. The Council have opted to manage the centre themselves rather than employing a third-party operator so that they can encompass all amenities under one roof. This prestigious project has won a RIBA 2016 National Award and a Low Carbon Construction prize upon its completion for delivery in such a tight timescale and keeping to a modest budget. An interesting environmental point is that the heat generated by the equipment in the Gym, such as treadmills, is being routed to heat the water in the pool!

Background –

The two-storey facility is situated in the heart of Tyneside and replaces the former buildings – Hebburn Swimming Pool and Hebburn Community Centre to create a lifestyle hub for leisure, fitness and wellbeing. Covering a huge 5800m², Hebburn Central has a vast range of high-quality facilities including:

  • A six-lane 25m Main Swimming Poolimg_1887-sml
  • Learner Pool
  • Multi-Court Sports Hall
  • Changing rooms
  • Sauna and Steam room
  • Gym Suite
  • Dance Studios
  • Soft Play Area
  • Library
  • Public Meeting Rooms
  • Customer Service Centre
  • Café
  • Reception Area

The Council have also provided the £12.8m centre with a post for the local community police officer and have also established links with South-Tyneside College.

Requirements –img_1855

A high finish and specification was required throughout and this included the need for a quality technical ceramic package in both the wet and dry leisure area. Tiling was needed for the Pool Tanks and Surround Areas, Wet Area Walls and Circulation Floor Tiling, which had to meet safety standards, be hard wearing, functional, easy to maintain and provide a colour scheme in keeping with the Architect’s vision for the Centre.

On the exterior, oxidised steel material was installed, as used on the Angel of the North. The design of the building outside is a reminder of the area’s shipbuilding heritage, so the colours chosen for the interior portray an industrial feel, whilst reflecting the light from the large windows and open plan layout.

Solution –

For over two years Spectile Ltd has continuously assisted Faulkner Brown Architects and Main Contractors Willmott Dixon with the provision of one of their architectural tiling packages and technical advice. Spectile provided assistance with Technical Drawings, the M40 Tiling Specification, provided individual samples, sample boards and the supply and delivery of all their tiles.

Spectile’s White and Grey Specialist Anti-Slip main and learner pool tank tiles, Matt 200 x 100mm Wall Tiles and White 25x25mm mosaics (implemented in the Jacuzzi) were delivered and installed. This calming palette of whites and greys were used to create the ultimate pool and spa feeling and continue the industrial theme throughout the site.img_1882

Hebburn Central is a further example of the expertise and technical knowledge that can be supplied by Spectile Ltd, utilising our in-house technical team. The services include post-completion site visits, anti-slip pendulum testing, advice on cleaning and maintenance and the provision of cleaning products. Our Technical Director paid the centre a courteous visit to see the finished installation and provide support with any further questions.

Enriching the lives of its residents, Hebburn Central opened its doors to the public in June 2015 and has quickly developed an outstanding reputation with its locals; with thanks to the Main Contractor Willmott Dixon and Architects Faulkner Brown on their outstanding new build project.
